I’m pretty sure that girl is on something. Not sure what, but it’s kind of freaking me out. Also, Alex Ebert has the funniest hairdo ever. Regardless, the music is pretty wonderful and life affirming.
Janelle Monae- Tightrope. (Her new album is out on the 13th of April, and I’m super pumped.)
Holy crap this is good.

Best of Music 2009!
Dear loyal Electric Version readers (all 3 of you),
I know I’ve been cruel and unfair and away from this Tumblr for far too long. Apparently that’s what employment does to your blogging. But to apologize for all of that I have a special holiday gift. Wait for it…Michelle’s fabulous Best Of list! Sure, you could have Pitchfork or Spin or someone else tell you what rocked...

Longing for a time I've never known: Aretha...
Sometime in August I was sitting with a friend at a cottage discussing soul music. I mentioned to my companion how sad I felt knowing that I would probably never get a chance to see the queen of soul herself live on stage. For some reason, this always plagued me more than other artists, because Aretha Franklin has touched me in ways I really can’t articulate.
Sure enough, only a couple of weeks...

Dead Man’s Bones with choir
Before I go into the whirlwind of a night I had at the Opera House tonight, I should thank my friend Becca for securing us tickets to one of the hottest shows of the month- Dead Man’s Bones, the brainchild of Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields. The show had originally been planned for a much smaller venue, but as tickets sold out in minutes, the promoters moved the...

Double feature: Origin:Orphan album and CD release
When I picked up my copy of the Hidden Camera’s brand new album Origin: Orphan, I knew I was in for some kind of musical adventure. What I didn’t know was that I was also scoring a free ticket to their incredibly intimate CD release party, held last night at the Pansexual nightclub “Goodhandys”.
The album itself turned out to quite a departure from the Hidden Cameras of AWOO and Mississauga...

Friends in Bellwoods 2 (Various Artists)
Is there room in Toronto for more than one hip music community? In other words, are the Friends in Bellwoods just another Broken Social Scene waiting to happen? Put simply, they are not.
Friends in Bellwoods 2, a 2 CD, 40-track compilation is the followup to the first Friends in Bellwoods record, the brainchild of Casy Mecija and James Bunton of...

Odds are I’ve already tried to throw this totally awesome video at ya, because frankly, I think Dead Man’s Bones are quite brilliant and am so pumped for their album. If you don’t know, Dead Man’s Bones is a collaboration between dreamboat actor Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields, which Pitchfork classifies as “goth-folk”. I think of it more like the super-indie...

Fleet Foxes: The beauty of plaid, whiskey and...
Day 1 of my two night stint at Massey Hall (as a paying audience member that is!) Massey Hall is by far my favourite venue in Toronto, and quite possibly one of my favourite venues, period.
In honor of tonights folk-rockers, Fleet Foxes, I decided to bust out the oversized plaid shirt. Guess what? Turns out I wasn’t the only one. I kept imagining everyone in the audience and the 3/5 band...

Farewell to my city by the sea: Jenn Grant and Hey...
I spent the past four years of my life living in a city by the sea. I would go to the local farmers market where you knew the names of the people serving you your pain-au-chocolat. I would eat at the same greasy spoon restaurant, my greasy spoon, the kind of place where the placemat tells you their long and (somewhat) significant history. We complained about the crappy selection of Indian food,...
